Gaylord is a city in Otsego County, located in the northern portion of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan. Gaylord styles itself as an "Alpen Village" and contains many buildings in the downtown area with Tyrolean traverse style motifs. With a unique location on the 45 parallel, the Alpen Village of Gaylord is Northern Michigan's heart. Its geographically gifted position offers the state’s best base camp for any outdoor pursuit. With easy access to trail networks, river systems, inland lakes, parks and vast expanses of wilderness, Gaylord is alive with adventure, only minutes from activities including golfing, skiing, boating, fishing, hiking, snowmobiling, water sports, and hunting, to name a few. In addition, Gaylord’s Downtown attractions also include top-notch culinary offerings, shopping, art galleries, and several music and craft festivals, including Alpen Fest, Gaylord’s Alpen-inspired celebration that honors the city’s heritage and partnership with its sister city, Pontresina, Switzerland. The widespread adoption of chalet-style architecture was first proposed after the development of the famed Otsego Ski Club on the east side of town in 1930. A club that remains directly across the street from Alpen Bluffs Outdoor Resort. The importance of this Resort cannot be overlooked, as community leaders adopted the theme throughout town, believing that Gaylord could capitalize on its snowbelt-centered location and distinguish itself architecturally and in spirit from other vacation destinations in northern Michigan.
